Ford recently introduced a green version of its Fiesta model at the British International Motor Show. For Americans concerned about high gas prices, the stats on this car are eye-popping. The ECOnetic features a diesel engine, improved aerodynamics, low-rolling-resistance tires and lubrication enhancements to achieve 63.6 miles per gallon. The car is also sleek, seats five and will sell for the equivalent of $22,000 in Britain beginning in November.
In a Ford press release, Roelant de Waard, chairman of Ford of Britain, said, "Many drivers are prepared to be green, but still want comfort, performance and an affordable price. ECOnetic answers that demand."
Well, that's great, but don't expect to be able to put an ECOnetic in your driveway anytime soon. According to BusinessWeek, the diesel version of the Fiesta likely won't reach the American market, although a gasoline version may come to our shores in a year and a half. Apparently, that's because the U.S. market remains rather hostile to diesel fuel while Europe is much more receptive.
Diesel fuel in the United States cost more due to a higher tax, and consumers view diesel fuel as old technology that is high-polluting.
These economic policies and consumer perceptions need to change. New clean-diesel fuel and biodiesel could go a long way toward reducing this country's dependence on foreign oil and cut pollution and greenhouse gases. Plus, the car's entry into a more diesel-friendly U.S. market would lift the struggling automaker's fortunes.
